TRAVEL UPDATE – British Airways: Young flyer Changes from May 2018

As part of British Airways’ commitment to child safeguarding the following changes will apply for travel from 1 May 2018

  • The minimum age of a person permitted to travel alone on British Airways will increase from 12 to 14 years of age
  • This will apply to all new bookings made from 01 May 2018

In addition, all customers aged under 16 and travelling alone must complete a parental/guardian consent form prior to travel. The form will be available on ba.com from early April 2018 so customers can download, print and complete prior to travel.

  • All customers aged under 16 years old, travelling alone on or after 01 May 2018, no matter when the ticket was purchased, should be encouraged to carry this consent form
  • For tickets purchased after 01 May 2018, the customer must carry the consent form
  • The young flyer must bring this from with them to the airport and carry it at all times
  • The young flyer will be required to attach a copy of their parent/guardian’s current passport to the form.

Advice for customers

  • British Airways will continue to permit children under the age of 14 to travel provided they are accompanied on the same flight by someone aged 16 or older either in the same or a linked booking
  • If a young flyer aged 14 and 15 years is travelling on their own, please be aware that they will be booked to travel as an adult, and therefore will be making their way through departure and arrival airports and boarding their flight/s without a chaperone. British Airways cannot accept parental responsibility for the young person. The parent or guardian accompanying children to the airport should wait until their flight departs before leaving the terminal. Additionally, they should ensure that the young person carries with them at all times:
    1. Any necessary travel documentation such as valid passport(s), visas and proof of return travel (as required).
    2. A signed British Airways consent form
    3. A new keyword YPTA must be added to the PNR
